A surrogate, also known as a gestational carrier (GC) is a woman who has a fertilized egg from another woman transferred into her uterus. The surrogate carries and delivers the pregnancy on behalf of the intended parent(s) or IP(s).
The gestational carrier is not biologically related to the child she is carrying; the eggs and sperm come from the intended parents or in some instances, donor egg and/or donor sperm.
Using the process known as in vitro fertilization (IVF), the eggs are fertilized by sperm in the lab and then the embryo is transferred into the uterus of the gestational carrier.
No! Everything from medication, medical appointments, necessary travel and insurance (if needed) is covered. Your legal contract will specify all covered items. The money needed to fund the parents surrogacy is held in a third party trust account. If you ever pay out of pocket for small items (for example picking up birth control from your local pharmacy) that amount is reimbursed quickly from the trust account
Being open and flexible with your matching preferences can help reduce the time it takes to match you. For example, being open to working with either straight or LGBTQ+ single or couple, domestic or international families, will mean a quicker matching time in most cases.
